Spell jars are a powerful and personal way to manifest intentions, but not only that. By incorporating art into the process, you can turn them into a little slice of free therapy that can help you cope with life’s challenges. And, who doesn’t have many challenges to juggle, hey? (And a million empty food jars waiting to be recycled).
The process of decorating and filling a spell jar becomes a creative outlet to pour your emotions into; transforming it into a meditative practice your well-being will thank you for.
My aim, inside this guide will show you how to combine art and your spirituality to create something that aligns with your emotional needs - so in times of uncertainty and change you have something to turn to — a magical self-care ritual.
Materials You’ll Need:
A glass jar (any size that feels right for your intentions)
Paint, markers, or stickers (for decorating the jar)
Paper and a pen (for writing down your intention)
Crystals, herbs, and other symbolic items (that align with your spell)
Super Glue, Mod Podge or Double Sided Sticky Tape (for sticking decorations)
Small decorative elements (ribbons, glitter, washi tape, etc.)
A candle to set the mood and channel energy (Optional, but would be cool to pick a colour is associated with the intention, e.g., red candle for love, or pink candle for friendship.
Step 1: Choose Your Intention
Before you start decorating, take a moment to think about what you want or need. Do you need protection, healing, calm, or strength? Are you dealing with stress, sadness, or confusion? Your intention will guide the art you make, so spend some time reflecting on your emotional state and well-being.
Example Intention: “I want inner peace and balance during this challenging time.”
Step 2: Decorate the Spell Jar
This is where the magic happens. The process of decorating your spell jar becomes an act of channeling your emotional energy into the object.
Start with Paint or Markers:
You can paint the spell jar with colours that align with your intention. For peace, consider soft blues, greens, or purples; for strength, use reds, oranges, or golds. Use any style that feels right to adorn your spell jar. You can also paint symbols like moons, stars, or sigils on the jar’s surface to strengthen the spell’s power. Add Personal Symbols:
Incorporate symbols that represent your intention. For example, if you want to feel grounded, you could paint roots or trees on the jar. If you’re seeking healing, try going for hearts, soothing patterns, or calming mandalas. You can also use washi tape or stickers to add intricate designs around the jar.
Creative Touches:
Add your personal flair by gluing decorative elements like glitter, gemstones, feathers, or ribbons. These extra touches don’t just make the spell jar a work of art, but help intensify your spell’s energy. As you decorate, focus on the intention and let the process channel the energy into the glass.
Step 3: Write Your Intention
Once your spell jar is decorated, take a moment to write down your intention on a small piece of paper. Keep it simple and straight to the point, for example, “I am calm and grounded,” or “I release all fear and embrace peace.” If you’re struggling to express your emotions, try drawing simple symbols or doodles that represent your feeling or intention. Adding powerful Rune symbols to the intention can also help cement the intention.
The key here is simple - it only has to mean something to you. Only you need to know the message.
Fold the paper and place it inside the spell jar. The physical act of placing your words (or doodle) inside the jar helps you to lock in your intention.

Step 4: Add Magical Ingredients
Now it’s time to fill your jar with items that amplify your intention. Use ingredients or items that resonate with your needs and emotions:
Crystals:
Choose crystals that correspond to your intention. For example, amethyst for peace, rose quartz for self-love, or black tourmaline for protection.
Herbs:
You can add herbs like lavender for calm, rosemary for strength, or sage for clearing negativity.
Dried flowers: add dried flowers that reflect the energy of the intention. For example, rose petals or buds reflect love, or Jasmine flowers for protection.
Other Elements:
You can also include personal items such as small photos, affirmations, or even a lock of hair for a more personal touch.
As you add each item to the jar, focus on your intention and visualise the ingredient attracting the energy you need to achieve your goal.
Step 5: Seal the Jar and Focus Your Energy
Once the spell jar is filled, seal it tightly. This represents you, ‘locking in of your intention’. Hold the spell jar in your hands and take a moment to meditate, focusing your energy and thoughts on what you want to manifest. It often helps to create an image of what it would look like when you have your desired results.
You may also choose to light a colour specific candle and let it burn while you focus on your spell jar, letting the flame represent the energy of your intention. As the candle burns, focus on your spell jar and the peace or strength it brings you. If you don’t have a colour specific candle, then using a white candle will suffice. White candles encapsulate all the colours of the spectrum.
Step 6: Keep Your Spell Jar in a Special Place
Now that your spell jar is complete, place it in a space that has meaningful to you. Whether it’s on your altar, beside your bed, or in a safe space in your home, keep the jar in a spot where it will remind you of your intention every day. If you ever feel overwhelmed or need a boost of energy, revisit the jar and reflect on your intention. Use it as a symbol or reminder to ground and refocus.

Step 7: Maintain Your Artistic Ritual
Every time you need to release any emotions or cope with difficult feelings, repeat the process of creating a spell jar. Each time you do, you’ll gain clarity and healing through the creative endeavour. Over time, this can become a regular part of your self-care ritual, with art as the vehicle of coping.
Using art as a way of coping not only helps you manifest your intentions but also allows you to channel your emotions into something beautiful and meaningful. The creative process itself is a form of art therapy, offering a peaceful outlet for stress and worries. With each jar, you’re turning your inner world into a magical and artistic expression of your needs, wants and desire, making it an effective self-care ritual.
So, next time you need to cope with life’s challenges, turn to art and craft your own spell jar as a magical act of self-care.
