Being rejected broke my heart. So I channeled it into art.

If you’re an artist, you’re not alone. We can all agree, there are moments in an our live’s when the sound of silence pounds in our ears louder than any applause. When a gallery door doesn’t even open never kind closes, or a submission is simply dismissed without reason.

For us all, rejection can cut deeper than flesh wound. My ‘Sing Me The Blues’ art sculpture was born from one of those moments. An art degree exhibition rejected because my ‘style’ just didn’t fit in with the ‘norm’. Truth be known, my art stood out like a facial zit on a first date.

But never shall I deny, I really am my own worse enemy (can you relate?). I just can’t be who I’m not, creatively or otherwise. So, I took that energy and transformed into something beautiful. Something raw. Something that symbolised I didn’t give a sh*t about other’s people’s opinion. *Okay, maybe a do, just a little :)

The Birth of a Soul-Led Sculpture

Before this piece existed as a fine art print for as a spiritual home décor (sorry, keywords, right?!), it lived as a mixed-media sculpture made of wood, metal, wire, and mod rock. Built by hand, but layered with an emotional need for external validation and a want to be seen.

Sometimes I think to deep, but all my art carries personal symbolism.

The wood held the weight of my anger; the mod rock, fragile yet strong enough to captured the paradox of a heart that can break and yet continue to beat, even when you want to give up. And honestly, the rejection felt personal, as though they were saying, “you just ain’t good enough.”

A Bridge to Healing

The narrative behind ‘Sing Me The Blues’ is about more than just plain, old heartbreak. It’s about the power of music as a healer. I don’t know about you, but when a song, or a piece of art resonates, it has the power to weed out some pretty raw emotions. And then, like magic - at the right beat or glance, instant release. It’s like taking off a winter’s coat on a hot summer’s day. The relief is insurmountable.

For me, art and music, are one of the same: the sweet sound of the soul—a sweet pill for the tears we may shed. Art is my vice. Other’s have drink, other’s have drugs - mine is the mightly pencil (and sometimes words). By the time the sculpture was complete, I’d channelled my frustion into something I was proud of. The pain inside of me had found its form.

Staying True to the Voice Within

Looking back, I see that rejection as a turning point. If my art had been accepted with ease (not that I’m one for classic belief, there’s honour in suffering). I might have been tempted to shrink myself in order to fit in. Instead, Sing Me The Blues taught me a vital lesson:

The only thing you can truly do in this lifetime is stay true to yourself, your goals, and that quiet voice calling you to greatness. People may laugh at you, reject you and even try to stop you. But, the only truth is this: when we create from that place of authenticity, we step outside those ever fleeting trends and expectations. And, we give others the permission to do the same. (So do it - who cares if people don’t get you, right?)
